Down syndrome or Trisomy 21 is the most common chromosomal condition known and is caused by a third copy of the 21st chromosome. Approximately 1 in 700 live births gets blessed with a little something extra. People with Down syndrome often have cognitive and developmental delays. This doesn't mean they can't do something, it just means they have to work a little harder to get there.

Innovative Research

Down syndrome research has historically been underfunded. We need to work together to change this statistic to increase funding for research that will hopefully lead to improving memory, learning and communication, and increasing individual's independence. This is something dear to my heart as I want to give James every opportunity a typical kid has and that includes living on his own and taking care of himself. I worry about his increased risk for Alzheimer's. Acting now to increase research may lead to developments that can actually impact James' life. That's something I'm all for!

Current research is working on targeted biomedical therapies that may improve intellectual difficulties that many people with Ds experience. Cognitive research is leading to improved memory and communication which can lead to an enhanced life for those with Ds. The opportunities are endless and I'm excited to see where they lead next.
